Keelhaulers Capture Conference Championship
Two years ago, the Cal Maritime men's basketball team made school history by winning the school's first conference championship. However, the 2009-10 team shared the championship with fellow conference members Holy Names and William Jessup. After tonight's 52-45 victory over William Jessup, this year's group of Keelhaulers holds the distinction of winning the school's first outright conference championship.
As often is the case in hard fought conference battles, it was the seniors who led the way for Cal Maritime. Senior Josh Greenwell led the way with 19 points including several key baskets down the stretch. Isaiah Moore, a fellow senior, joined Greenwell in double figures with 15 points and also grabbed a game high 8 rebounds.
For William Jessup, Preston Bramow (16 points) and Marqus Crawford (10 points) led the Warriors who fell to 5-4 in conference, a half game out of second place.
"I am very proud of our guys tonight. As we told them, in order to win a championship we had to find different ways to win. Saturday night we made 13 three pointers and tonight we only took 4 as William Jessup did a good job of defending our three point shooting. As has been the case all season, it came down to the defensive end and fortunately we made some timely stops," commented Head Coach Bryan Rooney.
With the win, the Keelhaulers move to a perfect 10-0 in conference and 17-9 overall. Cal Maritime is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Oakland to play rival Holy Names. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pm. This game marks the last road game of the season because by virtue of winning the conference, the Keelhaulers earn the #1 seed in the Cal Pac tournament and will host all games in which they participate.
