Keelhaulers Recognized by Cal Pac
California Pacific Conference regular season champion Cal Maritime placed a conference-high two players on the all-conference first team and two Keelhaulers won two of the conference's most illustrious awards, Commissioner Don Ott announced this morning.
Led by Defender of the Year Josh Greenwell, the Keelhaulers also are represented on the first team by senior Isaiah Moore. Moore, a senior from San Leandro, California, averaged 13.6 points to guide CSU Maritime to a 19-9 overall record and a 12-0 record in conference play. The perfect run through conference marks the first time in history that this feat has been accomplished. Fifth year CSU Maritime head coach Bryan Rooney was named Coach of the Year. The award for Rooney marks the third time in four years that he has been named the conference's top coach.
In addition to Moore and Greenwell, senior Isaiah Johnson and junior Keven Campbell were named to the All Conference second team. In total, Cal Maritime placed four players on the All Conference teams, tops among all conference members.
"These awards are a reflection of the outstanding season these four student-athletes have had. This recognition is also a representation of the success of our team. A strength of our team has been our depth and I think an argument could be made for five or six of our guys receiving recognition. While our players are excited about these awards, their commitment to one another on a daily basis has allowed this season to be a very special," commented Coach Rooney.
On receiving the Coach of the Year award for the third time, Rooney remarked, "This is absolutely a team award. Mike Warrington, Royster Martin, Jesse West, and Justin Bayer have done an unbelievable job this year. Their commitment and dedication to our players and our program has made all the difference."
The Keelhaulers look to continue their historic season as they host Simpson University in a Cal Pac semi-final game on Saturday night. Simpson is coming off a thrilling 82-80 over host Menlo College in the quarterfinal round. Game time is set for 7:30pm. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to Tuesday's conference final with a berth to the National Tournament on the line.
