Keelhaulers go 2-0 in Frank Dye Classic

A 30-point first half from Josh Hauser got the Keelhaulers out to an early lead, and the big fellas inside Ben Borja and Zavier Lucero finished it off for an 80-71 victory in game two of the 2018-19 season.

On the weekend before Halloween, the Keelhaulers couldn't quite bury the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon, but avoided an early-season scare at home. Hauser haunted Eastern Oregon for a career high 31 points in Cal Maritime's 80-71 victory Saturday night to finish of the Frank Dye Classic and move the Keelhaulers to 2-0 for the second straight season -- and its third in the past five.

The first half was all about Hauser as he started off his shooting clinic scoring his team's first 10 points of the game and came away with 30 of the team's 47 points at the half shooting an astonishing 10-11 from the field, and a perfect 6-6 from three. He would end up finishing with 31 points.

The mountaineers hung in the game despite the career performance from Hauser trailing by just seven points at the half 47-40 carried by guard Joel Anderson who finished with a team high 16 points, the big seven-foot center Jarek Schetzle, and guard Said Hersi.

The rest of the Keelhauler squad would pick things up in the second half. Zavier Lucero scored 12 of his 17 points in the second period pairing with Ben Borja, who once again had himself another big game to start of the season as he picked up his first double-double on the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lucero, Borja and Hauser would combine for 64 of Maritime's 80 points on the night. They led in almost every offensive category, especially above the rim and from the field coming down with 48 rebounds compared to the mountaineers 28 and shooting 47.1% to Eastern Oregon's 37.8%.

UP NEXT: The Keelhaulers (2-0) will look to keep things going as they will travel on the road for the first time this year and take on another tough test from the Cascade Collegiate Conference taking on the also undefeated Corban University (3-0) in Oregon Friday, November 3rd.
