Men's Basketball starts season hot
Cal Maritime picked up their first win on the year against the visiting Multnomah University Lions 87-62 in the second game of the Frank Dye Classic Friday night.
The Lions started off the scoring with two straight threes from Forrest Smith and Zach Richardson to jump out to an early 6-0 lead before the Keelhaulers went on a surging 16-0 run from the efforts of Junior Zavier Lucero and Senior Ben Borja never looking back. They went into the half with a 36-27 lead.
The Keelhaulers stayed hot as Zavier Lucero led the way scoring 21 of his 28 points in the second half. He finished with 28 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Seniors Josh Hauser and Ben Borja were also in the mix tallying 18 points and 16 points apiece as the returning trio had a combined 62 of the 87 points scored.
The defense for Maritime showed up big time holding the Lions, who were the top team in the nation for three pointers made and attempted last year, to just 9-43(20.9%) from down town forcing 15 turnovers as well. Justin Martin led the Lions in scoring with 14 points and Trey Fountain had 12 points along with five assists.
Cal Maritime honored the family of Frank Dye and held a moment of silence for the long-time member of the Keelhauler family who passed away this summer.
