Keelhaulers edged in back-and-forth battle vs. William Jessup
VALLEJO, Calif. – Ten tied scores and three lead changes took place throughout Monday night's non-conference matchup inside PEAC Main Gym, the first of consecutive games scheduled against William Jessup.
Thanks to a layup from Divine Nwoko, with 3:06 remaining, the Keelhaulers pulled even with the Warriors at 64 apiece. By scoring on consecutive possessions, William Jessup briefly held a four-point lead until Nwoko connected on a pair of free throws that trimmed his team's deficit to a one-possession margin.
Fouled from distance with 39 seconds left to play, the Warriors' Jaylen Johnson connected on all three shots from the stripe to push his team's lead to five.
Cal Maritime created a couple looks from three in the final moments of the game but did not connect on either attempt; its second shot led to the final basket of the night, which increased the Warriors' cushion to seven points at 73-66, the game's final score.
With Monday's result, William Jessup remains unbeaten this season at 6-0, the Keelhaulers will head to Rocklin for their October 23 road rematch with a 2-3 overall record.
Nwoko led all players with 16 points by hitting half of his 12 overall attempts and 2 of 4 from three. Miles Pennington and Braxton Adderly ended their night with 14 and 12 points apiece.
Collectively, Cal Maritime shot 42.6 percent from the floor compared to William Jessup's 40 percent shooting clip, but the visitors recorded 22 second chance points compared to the Keelhaulers' seven.
Once the Keelhaulers return home from next Tuesday's rematch, it will have a handful of days to prep for its next home game, slated for 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 28 vs. Eastern Oregon.
