Amil Fields named season's first Cal Pac Men's Basketball Player of the Week

VALLEJO, Calif. - In last Sunday's home game vs. Antelope Valley, Cal Maritime erased its 16-point deficit midway through the second half in a game it won by 10 points. Playing a key role throughout the evening was sophomore forward Amil Fields, which is why he received the California Pacific Conference's inaugural Player of the Week award for the 2021-22 season.

Throughout his 26 minutes on the court, the Hayward, California native scored a game-high 22 points by nailing four shots from three, combined with his 10 of 12 shooting at the free throw line. Fields' five defensive rebounds were a team-high and one-fifth of the Keelhaulers' overall total.

In the second half alone, Fields sank 4 of 7 shots from behind the arc, connected on 9 of 10 free throw attempts and scored 21 points (throughout his 15 minutes played), all earned after the Pioneers held their game-high advantage, to lead the Keelhaulers' comeback over a team that won three of the league's last five titles.

When Antelope Valley rallied for its final charge and pulled within one, it was his seven made free throws that helped Cal Maritime build a double-digit cushion with 21 seconds left to play.

Elias Ezenekwe (Antelope Valley), Chris Jones (Pacific Union) and Craig Mueller (Park-Gilbert) were this week's other award nominees.

Cal Maritime will bring momentum from Sunday's come-from-behind victory to PEAC Main Gym, site of its next game, when Bushnell visits Vallejo for this Sunday's 2 p.m. non-conference matchup. This is the first game of the Keelhaulers' basketball doubleheader that also includes a 5 p.m. contest between the women's team and Southern Oregon. Video stream and live stats for the men's matchup are available by clicking respective links.
