VALLEJO, Calif. – Men's basketball will return to action for the first time since December 14, when it defeated Holy Names at home for its third win in a row, when a five-game homestand starts on Saturday against Benedictine Mesa in the first of three consecutive games in as many days. Also visiting PEAC Main Gym are Park University Gilbert and Embry-Riddle on Sunday and Monday, respectively.
All three games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
When Cal Maritime's lengthy hiatus concludes, due to postponed games related to COVID protocols, it will face a tournament-like situation that has the potential to pay dividends when the league's postseason tournament takes place. Depending on its seed, a Cal Pac tournament team may play up to three games in as many days; the top two seeds will receive a bye, and earn automatic berths in the semifinals, with the third-sixth seeds squaring off in the first round the previous day.
Even though it is a unique situation, playing three games on consecutive days provides the perfect firsthand experience for the Keelhaulers, should they advance to postseason play.
If you are a basketball fan, this weekend is a dream come true because you can watch Cal Maritime look to extend its current win streak against a group of Arizona-based teams that will take their turn visiting Vallejo in men's basketball's inaugural set of league contests.
Saturday's game against Benedictine Mesa is each team's Cal Pac opener since the Redhawks last game took place on January 6 at home against SAGU-American Indian University. With its 86-70 result, Benedictine Mesa collected its second victory within a four-game block of action as the team snapped an eight-game skid with a three-point win against San Diego Christian College on December 30.
Following their game against the Keelhaulers, the Redhawks will head to Pacific Union the following day before ending a three-game road swing next week at Park University Gilbert, the second team to visit campus this weekend.
With losses in four of their last five played, including the last three straight, the Buccaneers will face Cal Maritime in its inaugural Cal Pac contest of the season before they also head to PUC the next night. Once that game against the Pioneers concludes, the team will play six straight on its home floor.
Park University rang in the new year at home against Western New Mexico and suffered its third loss in a row after dropping games on December 19 and 31 against University of Montana-Western and 10th-ranked Arizona Christian. In games vs. UMW and WNM, sophomore forward Erik Palmer led his team with 15 and 14 points, respectively, and enters Sunday's game with a team-high 12.9 ppg scoring average.
Since Park University opened its Gilbert campus in 2018 — the flagship campus is in Parkville, Missouri — this is the inaugural game involving the Keelhaulers and Buccaneers. Park University Gilbert joined the NAIA and Cal Pac Conference before the start of the 2020-21 academic year.
After opening its Northern California road trip at Pacific Union on Saturday, Embry-Riddle will visit Cal Maritime on Monday before returning to Prescott, Arizona.
The Eagles opened the 2021-22 campaign with wins in two of its first three games, thanks to positive results against SAGU-American Indian University in a neutral-site game and at West Coast Baptist, before dropping its next 10 games — all on the road.
Following its league-opening three-game trip, which also includes a stop at Benedictine Mesa on January 22, Embry-Riddle will finally play its first home game of the season six days later when UC Merced visits Prescott, ending a 17-game season-opening road swing in the process.
The Keelhaulers are 9-1 all-time versus the Eagles and hold a perfect 5-0 mark in games played in Vallejo. Embry-Riddle's lone victory took place at home on February 14, 2019, which snapped a seven-game head-to-head losing streak.
Since that matchup, Cal Maritime swept the 2020 season's series, and will face ERAU for the first time since February 20, 2020, when it departed Prescott with a two-point victory.
