VALLEJO, Calif. – Nearing the half-way point of its Cal Pac schedule, Cal Maritime holds the best conference record after winning five of its first six league matchups. As it enters the back-half of conference play, men's basketball is working hard to replicate those results since all Cal Pac teams are starting to notice the overall standings now that postseason play is only a handful of weeks away.
The top six teams will head to Antelope Valley to compete for a league title, and the Cal Pac's automatic NAIA Tournament bid from February 27-March 1. The top two seeds will earn a bye to the semifinal round and face the winners of two First Round games played the previous day.
With only one victory separating the top three teams in the Cal Pac's North Division, every game carries added importance to create the luxury of separation as the season winds down. Tied for second behind the Keelhaulers in the division are Simpson and UC Merced, Cal Maritime's opponents for the next three games.
Starting with Thursday's road game in Merced, Cal Maritime will square-off against the Bobcats twice within a six-day timespan since its Jan. 10 home Cal Pac opener vs. UCM was postponed due to COVID protocols.
Please note that attendance is limited at Thursday's game to 100 UC Merced campus community members.
The return game vs. the Bobcats is slated for February 8 in Vallejo on Faculty Appreciation Night. During halftime of that game, Cal Maritime Athletics and Physical Education will honor Dr. Khalid Bachkar, Thomas Brindle, Captain Tamara Burback, Thomas Clyatt, Peter Hayes, Dr. Tony Lewis, Robert Neumann, Dr. Amy Parsons, Dr. Dinesh Pinisetty , David Satterwhite, Dr. Joshua Shackman, Dr. William Tsai, Dr. Ryan Wade and Margaret Ward for positively influencing cadet-athletes' undergraduate experience.
Thursday's 2022 series opener will feature two of the league's hottest teams in the Keelhaulers, a squad that won nine of its last 10 played, and UC Merced, winners of its last four in a row — victories all earned on the road.
Prior to its current winning streak, the Bobcats lost four straight; sandwiched between those results were postponed road games at Cal Maritime and Pacific Union.
This week's challenging schedule continues on Saturday when the Keelhaulers return home to open its final homestand of the season, starting with their series opener against Simpson. As is the case with UC Merced, Cal Maritime will battle the Red Hawks twice within a brief amount of time since the return game is slated nine days later, on February 16, in Redding.
Forced to postpone its inaugural set of Cal Pac games, Simpson started league play with three wins in a row before falling to UC Merced. The Red Hawks rebounded with another pair of wins before ending its Arizona road trip with a loss at Benedictine Mesa last Sunday.
It's been a tale of two seasons for Simpson throughout the year since it boasts a 6-2 home record, but wins in only two of six played on the road (3 of 7 if one includes its lone neutral-site game).
Even though Simpson and Cal Maritime split the season series from 2018-20, the Keelhaulers won six of the last 10 played, and hold matching 3-2 records in the last five games played in Vallejo and in Redding.
