VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime will face a unique situation when it heads to Lancaster, California, to open the Cal Pac Men's Basketball Championship on Sunday, at 2 p.m., at the Pioneer Events Center since both originally-scheduled head-to-head games, and subsequent attempts to schedule these matchups, were postponed (and eventually canceled) due to COVID protocols.
These local rivals will battle for a spot in Monday's 5 p.m. semifinal versus top-seeded Saint Katherine; the winner of that game will advance to Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. championship contest.
For the Keelhaulers, Sunday's Championship opener marks their second trip to Lancaster in as many weeks since the final game of the regular season took place at Antelope Valley this past Monday. That game against the Pioneers capped a three-game road swing that also included matchups at Simpson and La Sierra.
Due to a COVID-canceled 2020-21 season, Sunday's game is the first between Cal Maritime and the Bobcats since February 29, 2020, when UC Merced advanced to the championship game of the 2020 Cal Pac Men's Basketball Championship. That result also extended the Bobcats' head-to-head win streak to four games.
In addition to facing one another for the first time this season, both teams enter tournament play with a split of their last four games. For UC Merced, those results took place throughout the first three weeks of February; the Keelhaulers played that exact number of games over a 10-day timespan.
Senior guard Mason Westlake leads the Bobcats with his 16.3 points per game average, followed by freshman guard Jayson Wiltz at 114 ppg. Junior forward Kingsley Obiorah and sophomore forward Jaron Mertle are the team's top rebounders at 8.0 and 6.5 per game.
