VALLEJO, Calif. – Following a start to the season that included two games within a 22-hour timespan, Cal Maritime will remain local for its next pair of contests, starting with Saturday's 3 p.m. home game vs. the Westmont Warriors. Its schedule will continue four days later when the Keelhaulers head to UC Davis for the first of two exhibition games taking place this season.

The other exhibition is set for November 22 when Holy Names visits PEAC Main Gym.

Even though men's basketball dropped its first two games, the team was on the precipice of winning each matchup until their opponents pulled away in the final moments. With a roster filled with newcomers — nine of 15 players will make their CSUM debut this season — that experience will play a crucial role in the team's development and helping the Keelhaulers earn one of six coveted spots in the Cal Pac Conference Men's Basketball Championship.

Even though the sample size is small league-wide, senior captain Miles Pennington is among the Cal Pac's top shooters since his .542 overall field goal percentage is a top-five figure entering this week's upcoming games.

Pennington also leads the team in scoring at 16 points per game with junior guard Lee Jones Jr. right behind him averaging 15.5 ppg.

After opening its season with home victories over La Sierra, Caltech and Bethesda, Westmont will begin a four-game road trip on Friday at Pacific Union before continuing its weekend in Northern California with Saturday's stop in Vallejo.

Unlike Cal Maritime's roster, which is filled with new talent, nine Warriors on the 2022-23 squad are upperclassmen — a total that includes four seniors. Led by Drew Ramirez at 16.7 ppg,  seven Warriors hold double-figure scoring averages after their first week of action.

Saturday's contest is the first between Cal Maritime and Westmont since December 30, 2016, and the first in Vallejo since December 19, 2009.

Iron sharpens iron, which is one of numerous reasons why the Keelhaulers will travel down I-80 for Wednesday's exhibition game at UC Davis, the second head-to-head meeting in CSUM's history. This meeting provides the Keelhaulers with a phenomenal opportunity to test themselves against Division I competition, and opportunity prepare everyone for the rigors of the 2022-23 season.

These teams last met on January 3, 2015, in a game that also took place in Davis.

Led by junior guard Elijah Pepper, a member of the Big West Conference's Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Team, the Aggies will open their season on Monday at Cal before hosting the Keelhaulers in the team's home opener.

Pepper ended last season averaging 15.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, new career highs, and scored double figures in 20 of 24 games.

Led by 12th-year head coach Jim Les — a two-time Big West Coach of the Year and former NBA shooting standout who played a combined seven seasons for Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings and the Atlanta Hawks — the Aggies are one of 32 teams in the country ESPN staff writer Myron Medcalf encourages basketball fans to keep an eye on this season.

The Aggies are a familiar team to current Keelhauler head coach Tim Bross since their paths crossed when Hawai'i faced UC Davis in the semifinal round of the 2015 Big West Tournament. As a member of the Rainbow Warriors' staff, his tutelage helped UH defeat the Aggies and earn a berth in the event's championship game.
