VALLEJO, Calif. – Men's basketball fans have every reason to feel excited about this year's team now that Cal Maritime is at the midpoint of its Cal Pac schedule. All six of the Keelhaulers' victories were earned against league opposition; with a roster filled with young talent and newcomers, a two-possession margin was the difference in five of the team's losses.

After seeing its recent three-game win streak snapped last Saturday at Antelope Valley, CSUM is eager to build another one, starting with Thursday's home game against Simpson — the first men's basketball event of 2023 taking place inside PEAC Main Gym.

Following a split of its last six games, all played on the road, Thursday's game marks the start of a home-heavy portion of a schedule that includes six of the next seven taking place on the Keelhaulers' home court. The lone road game within that block of action is slated for Saturday when CSUM seeks a season split when its heads to UC Merced.

Both of this week's games will tip at 7:30 p.m.

Do not let Simpson's 7-10 overall and 4-6 Cal Pac record fool you since every team will present a challenge with six available berths at the league's year-end postseason tournament up for grabs. Now that Cal Maritime is entering the second half of conference play, everyone is familiar with one another, knows what to expect and who to contain to secure a victory.

When these teams first met on New Year's Eve, is was a game-winning shot from the Red Hawks that snatched a victory away from the Keelhaulers at the buzzer. Sine that matchup, SU defeated La Sierra and fell to Antelope Valley and UC Merced.

Of their final five games taking place in January, the Red Hawks will only play one on its home floor.

Senior forwards Javonntie Jackson and Gary Mims lead SU's offense by averaging a league-high of 17.4 and 14.4 ppg, respectively.

This week's games feature another pair of the Cal Pac's top scorers in Cal Maritime senior forward Miles Pennington — his 14.5 ppg average is the fifth-highest individual figure — and UC Merced senior guard Mason Westlake, who ranks third at 15.7 ppg.

When they last met on December 28, the Keelhaulers and Bobcats participated in a back-and-forth battle until free throws enables UCM to pull away and defeat CSUM. Since the Keelhaulers currently trail the Bobcats by one game in the Cal Pac standings, a victory in Merced would erase that gap, give Cal Maritime its second positive result in the last three head-to-head contests and a split of this season's series.

Entering this week's round of games, UC Merced is tied for second with Saint Katherine, Westcliff sits fourth (the Warriors' game at Park Gilbert was postponed, the pair played one less league game compared to everyone else in the upper half of the standings), Cal Maritime is fifth, one full game ahead of Benedictine Mesa.

The conference's top six teams will head Mesa, Arizona, in late February to compete at the Cal Pac's Men's Basketball Championship.
