VALLEJO, Calif. – A season-long five-game homestand starts Thursday for Cal Maritime when it hosts UC Santa Cruz in the final non-conference game of the season. This is a designated The Watch – Gold Game that starts at 7:30 p.m.
Following its battle against the Banana Slugs, men's basketball will return to league play when its rivals visit Vallejo for an 8:30 p.m. clash. Please note Saturday's tip time since this is one hour later than the Keelhaulers' normal designated start time.
As the conference enters the back-half of its slate, the Keelhaulers are battling for one of the Cal Pac's six berths at its Men's Basketball Championship, hosted by Park Gilbert and slated for mid-February. With every game playing a vital role in each team's playoff push, men's basketball faces a unique luxury by ending the regular season with five games at home, out of its final seven versus league foes.
Coming off an impressive performance at UC Merced, their first victory on the Bobcats' home court since January of 2017, the Keelhaulers will compete in a game originally scheduled for November 16 until it was postponed out of an abundance of caution due to COVID.
Thursday's Gold Game will give CSUM an opportunity to build momentum for the final portion of its schedule against a UCSC squad that lost its last four games.
What started last Saturday at Colorado College continues on Thursday: Cal Maritime is the second of five straight road opponents for the Banana Slugs.
Cal Maritime is 7-9 all-time against the Banana Slugs, but earned three of those victories out of five games played on its home court. UC Santa Cruz won six of 10 games on its floor, but lost the last head-to-head matchup, 76-64, which took place on December 3, 2019.
In addition to seeking its second straight positive result, CSUM would like to break an unusual streak on Thursday since the road team emerged victorious in each of the last five games.
Two days later, the Keelhaulers will seek their seventh win in a row against their league rivals from Angwin; the desired result will lead to a sweep of the season series and help head coach Tim Bross remain undefeated against the Pioneers.
When these teams first met this season on December 8, Cal Maritime turned a 46-37 halftime lead into a 99-90 victory.
Following its overtime win at La Sierra, which took place on January 14, PUC lost its next two league games — at home against UC Merced on January 19 and at Simpson two days later — before dropping a January 24 non-conference home contest against Dominican.
