BUTTE, Mont. – Cal Maritime outscored Carroll (MT), 54-51 in the second half of Saturday's game at Kelvin Sampson Court in its final game of the Comfort Inn Fall Classic, hosted by Montana Tech, by shooting 53 percent from the floor and from three-point territory throughout the first half.
Carroll built an early lead in the first half that held throughout the afternoon as the Fighting Saints defeated the Keelhaulers, 95-83, in each team's final tournament game of the weekend.
Cal Maritime will continue a season-long eight-game road swing next weekend at next weekend's Ken Schumann Classic, hosted by Pacific (OR), and enter that tournament with a 1-3 overall record.
Jamal Frenchwood led four double-digit CSUM scorers with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting; Lucky Hampton earned a spot in the starting lineup from Coach Johnson and rewarded that decision by hitting half of his 12 shots of the floor to finish with 16 points.
Jake Matteson earned 13 of Cal Maritime's 30 bench points — its reserves outscored their counterparts from Carroll by seven — and DeAndre Minor finished with 11 points and was one of two players who collected a team-high six rebounds.
Drew Fischer also finished with six boards and Frenchwood finished right behind his teammates by collecting five. Combined, this trio earned 17 of Cal Maritime's 28 rebounds, including 3 of 6 on the offensive glass.
