VALLEJO, Calif. — Off since December 23 when it played Nelson University-Arizona, Cal Maritime's lengthy hiatus will end this week when it plays three games in six days, starting with Thursday's home Cal Pac Conference opener vs. UC Merced.
Its week will continue Saturday afternoon at Simpson, the team's first conference road game, and end inside PEAC Main Gym Tuesday night with the first of two games scheduled this season versus Lincoln (CA).
The Keelhaulers were scheduled to face Stanton last Saturday in Anaheim before that game was postponed due to factors out of CSUM's control.
Instead, Cal Maritime will play its inaugural game of 2025 against a UC Merced squad that won its last three games against non-conference opponents: Lincoln (CA), Nobel University and UC Santa Cruz.
The Keelhaulers-Bobcats matchup has been an evenly-matched series, literally, with each team winning 13 of the last 26 head-to-head games.
Even though UC Merced won the last three straight against CSUM, eight of the Keelhaulers' wins against their local league counterpart took place at home.
This is the last season that Cal Maritime and UCM will compete as Cal Pac rivals since the Bobcats will complete their transition to the NCAA Division II level this year and begin competing under its new status on July 1.
After opening conference play at Pacific Union Thursday night, Simpson will face Cal Maritime in its first Cal Pac home game.
Entering this week's slate with a 7-8 overall record, the Red Hawks are 2-4 at home this season and lost three of its last four played in Redding.
Cal Maritime would love nothing more than to snap Simpson's six-game head-to-head win streak, a string of results that includes a buzzer-beating heave on New Year's Eve in 2022 that gave the Red Hawks a heartbreaking one-point victory, and a last-minute surge in the following matchup that resulted in a five-point loss at PEAC Main Gym.
Simpson possesses identical 5-3 all-time home and road records vs. the Keelhaulers.
Following Monday's holiday, Lincoln (CA) will wrap-up a busy week for men's basketball in the first of two games scheduled this season. The return game, Cal Maritime's final non-conference event of the season, is set for February 20 at Chabot College.
Of the six games reported by the Oaklanders, its lone victory took place on November 4 at Pacific Union.
This is the first home game vs. Lincoln in Cal Maritime's history.
