VALLEJO, Calif. — Entering the final two weeks of the season, five teams will battle for three remaining berths at the Cal Pac Men's Basketball Championship. With postseason play on the line, this week's league contests will play a crucial role for Cal Maritime because after Thursday's game vs. Westcliff and Saturday's matchup vs. La Sierra, both at home, only one conference game remains on its schedule — a February 22 home rivalry contest against Pacific Union.
Westcliff and La Sierra enter the week occupying second and third place in the conference standings; each team has a game in hand — they are the only ones with six games played against league opponents — compared to a CSUM squad that will experience its bye next Thursday.
With fourth-place Simpson slated to face the Cal Pac's top-three teams throughout the final weeks of the season, all on the road, conditions are favorable to the Keelhaulers since they will play their last thee league games on the road.
To climb the standings, Cal Maritime will seek a split of its season series against Westcliff and La Sierra after dropping both games during last month's Southern California road trip.
PEAC Main Gym provided a true home-court advantage for CSUM in recent season since it won five of the last six games played on campus against Westcliff and four of five against La Sierra.
Barring recent results, Cal Maritime leads the all-time series against each team winning 6 of 10 games against the Warriors and 9 of the last 12 versus the Golden Eagles.
Thursday's game will feature three of the conference's top shooters: WU's Evan Hoosier holds the top individual field goal percentage (.660 percent) with the Keelhaulers' DeAndre Minor and the Warriors' Aaron Strings shooting .562 and .516 from the floor.
Jamal Frenchwood leads Cal Maritime in scoring with his 13.1 points per game, the seventh-highest figure among all Cal Pac players. By comparison, La Sierra's offense is unique since 10 players score five or more points per game, but nobody on the Golden Eagles' roster is averaging double figures this season.
