Head of the Lagoon Crew Race
Head of the Lagoon Crew Race
The results from the Head of the Lagoon are finally in. Our novice eight finished third in a time of 20:33, our women's open four finished fifth in 22:21, our men's open four "A" boat finished second in 20:29, and our men's open four "B" boat finished fourth in 22:02.
Now, let's put that into perspective. The novice eight finished two seconds (that's right, two seconds) behind second-place Sonoma State, and a minute behind first-place Sac State. Two weeks ago, at the Head of the American, the novice eight finished two minutes and eighteen seconds behind Sonoma State and two minutes and fifty-six seconds behind Sac State. As for previous Cal Maritime novice eights at the Head of the Lagoon, we finished in 21:25 in 2009, 21:01 in 2007, and 20:51 in 2005.
The women's four finished four seconds (that's four seconds over 5000 meters) behind both third-place UCSD and fourth place Saint Mary's "B" boat, 17 seconds behind second-place Sonoma State, and 27 seconds behind first-place Saint Mary's "A" boat. Two weeks ago, at the Head of the American, we came in ahead of the Saint Mary's "B" boat and Sonoma State at the Head of the American, but we finished two minutes and twelve seconds behind Saint Mary's "A" boat. The only other year that we raced women's four at the Head of the Lagoon, 2007; we finished in 23:23.
The men's open four "A" boat finished 24 seconds behind first-place Sonoma State and 18 seconds in front of third-place Santa Clara. The "B" boat finished one minute and fifteen seconds behind Santa Clara. Two weeks ago in Sacramento, the "A" boat finished sixteen seconds behind Santa Clara. In previous years at the Head of the Lagoon, the men's four finished in 21:09 in 2009, 21:52 in 2007, and 21:55 in 2005.
While it's difficult to compare races, including those at the same location, I'm pleased with the results, overall. Let's finish the season on a strong note this coming Sunday in San Mateo.
