Head of the Charles

Head of the Charles

The men's and women's crew teams raced to strong finishes in their fall racing season, thanks, in large part, to the purchase of three new crew shells over the past three years. The new shells – an eight, a four, and a pair – have provided a major upgrade to the inventory at the boathouse, allowing everyone to benefit. The four was the latest purchase, with its maiden voyage being the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. There, the men's heavyweight varsity four continued to improve in the standings over the last few years, finishing 19th out of 43 boats from around the country, and earning an automatic berth in next year's regatta. Overall, the crew team has been growing, with ninety interested cadets attending the introductory team meeting. Fifty cadets – a combination of varsity and novice – competed during the season. In Northern California regattas, at least one boat finished in the top four in every regatta, including three first-place finishes and four second-place finishes. And, for the first time in recent memory, the women's team fielded a varsity four and a novice eight. The spring 2,000-meter sprint season opens up in early March and concludes at the end of April with the championships.
