John Frangineas finishes 1st in ACRA Championships!
Cal Maritime rowers Ethan Ho and John Frangineas had strong races in the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) Indoor Rowing Championships this past weekend, with Frangineas winning the men's varsity singles event in a time of 6:27.8 and Ho finishing seventh (out of a field of 30) in a time of 6:47.1.
The ACRA typically holds an on-the-water championship for the spring 2,000-meter season. This year, however, they elected to host a virtual indoor championship instead. Rowers from across the country submitted their 2k times to be ranked against each other.
Although there has been no on-the-water racing this season, both Frangineas (Mechanical Engineering '21) and Ho (Marine Transportation '22) have been regulars at land workouts held for those rowers on or near campus, and they have been working hard since the beginning of the academic year.
"Both Ethan and John are extremely dedicated rowers and great assets to the program and to the campus," Head Coach Mike Tressel said of the two rowers. "We'll certainly miss John next year, but I'm happy that he got this win in his last season at Cal Maritime."
The ACRA is mostly comprised of smaller schools around the country, but other teams in their race included the University of Vermont, University of Illinois, Murray State University, Chico State, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, University of Oregon, University of Colorado, and Orange Coast College.
