RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – Cal Maritime enjoyed a stellar weekend at Lake Natoma throughout its inaugural post-COVID appearance at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship, hosted by the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
Even though the Keelhaulers needed to scratch its spot in the Novice 8+, they celebrated a second-place finish in the Novice LWT 4+. Cal Maritime also placed fifth in the Men's 2x and finished 12 among all West Coast teams in the Novice 4+.
"This was a great weekend of racing," said head coach Hannah Rosa, who completed her first year leading this program at the WIRA's annual year-end event.
"I am proud of the way everyone worked hard throughout the year, and the improvement that took place from our first practice through our last event. Everyone on this team should feel proud about how their sacrifices helped strengthen this program and place it in a successful position for next year."
Cal Maritime's visit to the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, its second within a three-week timespan, capped a strong finish to the 2023-24 academic year. As a member of the President Cup's field, the Keelhaulers' Novice 8, a group comprised by Colby Allen, Ethan Azevedo, Johnny Ferguson, Nathan Nakadate, Max Southworth, Ty Simpson-Kane (coxswain). William Souza, Joshua Thomas and Collin Wojahn missed out on first place by only one second.
