(Mare Island, CA) Cal Maritime Rugby defeats Humboldt State 45-10
The Cal Maritime rugby team rebounded from two poor performances to beat Humboldt State University in league play. Senior Paul Stetson led the Keelhauler's with 3 spectacular tries, the final of which came on a 60 yard interception. The win evens CMA's league record at 3 and 3 (7 and 3 overall).
The Keelhaulers led 24-0 at halftime behind 2 tries by Stetson, an opening try by center Wyatt Matthews, and a multi-pass series finished off in the corner by lock Ryan Lynch. Fullback Will Fitzpatrick converted 2 of the 4 tries. Humboldt State came alive in the second half and applied pressure throughout the period. However, CMA was able to answer HSU's scores with tries of their own from Stetson's interception, a daring run by scrumhalf Jason Herring, and a great solo run by flanker Kyle Lewis as time expired. Fitzpatrick converted all 3 tries for a final score of 45-10.
Keelhauler coach Steven Hiatt said "We really played well in the first half, paying attention to our defensive and offensive responsibilities. Tying it all together was strong communication and a high work rate. Unfortunately, we fell off in the second half and weren't very affective with most of our offensive possession. Humboldt's determination In the second was very evident. I'm pleased with our improvement but we still have a lot of work to do to get ready for the California Cup playoff in two weeks.". CMA will host Southern California's D3 champion Cal Lutheran in the inaugural Cal Cup on Sunday, March 25.
The Cal Maritime Academy next play when they host the University of Nevada Reno on Saturday, March 17. Kick-off for the rugby game will be at 1:00. Fans are warmly invited to come out and watch Keelhauler rugby.
