Cal Maritime Defeats Monterey Bay
Cal Maritime Rugby Team Beats CSUMB in League Match, 42 - 12
The Cal Maritime Rugby Team scored 7 tries to beat the CSU Monterey Bay rugby team, 42 - 12. The win improved CMA's league record to 3 - 0 (6 - 2 overall). Junior Clayton Jordan led the Keelhaulers with 17 points by scoring 2 tries, 2 conversion, and 1 penalty kick (worth 3 points). Senior Axel Krauter, Junior Ben Jendricks, and sophomores Tyler Bridge, Evan Chambers, and Carter Asivido also scored tries for CMA. CSUMB scored tries midway through each half. Overall, between Jordan and Chad Mensinger, the Keelhaulers were only 2 of 7 on conversions. Freshman Jacob Jagelski played well in his first start at scrum half for injured Brian Martinez. "We showed flashes of strong play but rarely did it continuously for a long periods of time" CMA"s Coach Steven Hiatt said. "CSUMB's pressure was sufficient to thwart many opportunities we had to go forward. If we hope to be successful against Santa Rosa JC, we will have to take much better care of possession." Senior Axel Krauter and sophomore Evan Chambers were selected as "players of note" for the game but the opposing coach and referee.
Cal Maritime's next match will be on Friday, February 14, when they host league rival Santa Rosa Junior College at Bodnar Field. Kick-off will be at 7pm. "Santa Rosa is always a good team and again shows it this year with an undefeated record, including a win over pre-season favorite Sonoma State whom they beat 26 - 22" said CMA Coach Steve Hiatt. "If we don't take care of our possession as well as put up a stiff defense, SRJC will make us pay for our mistakes time and again."
All fans, supporters, and alumni are invited to come out and watch the friendly match.
