CMA Rugby Moves into First Place

CMA Rugby moved into first place with a hard fought yet decisive win over Santa Rosa JC. The Keelhaulers led 12-7 at half time and posted a final score of 29-14. Appropriate for Senior Night when Cal Maritime honored its 8 graduating rugby seniors, senior Sean Barlow led off the scoring by returning a blocked kick to touch down for a try. Freshman Wyatt Juntunen scampered 80 yards off a stolen lineout for the next score. SRJC briefly took the lead in the second half with determined phase play before an interception by junior Sean Carroll and nifty running by junior Isaac Carrel scored 2 more tries to put the Keelhaulers comfortably back into the lead. A late try by junior Shane Bracken sealed the victory.

CMA's Junior Varsity side lost to SRJC 29 to 10 in the late game. Freshman Matthew Michaud and junior Allen Washington scored for CMA.

The Keelhaulers have a bye before playing their last 2 league games at UOP in Stockton on March 11 and at CSUMB in Monterey on March 18. The first rounds of Pacific Coast small college playoffs will be held at CMA on April 1 when the top 2 Northern California small college teams face off against the top 2 Southern California small college teams. Saturday's winners will move onto the NSCRO PacWest Finals at Claremont College on April 8-9.
