Rugby knocked out in of Sweet 16

Cal Maritime allowed Angelo St. to finish to overtake the lead late in the first and second half. They will play the University of Denver in the Pac West Third Place Game at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 8.

The Keelhaulers struck quickly in the match establishing some early momentum. After a side out, they perfectly executed a maul with George Petrucci carrying the ball with his back turned to the defense. His teammates provided protection and coaxed him along, before Shane Bracken took the ball from Petrucci to punch it in for a try less than three minutes into the game.

Cal Maritime made it 10-0 after a Sean Carroll try, but 17 unanswered points by Angelo St. Rams were assisted by too many Cal Maritime penalties, and the keelhaulers trailed 17-10 at the half.

A penalty kick by Angelo St. put them up by 10, but The Keelhaulers heated up in early in the second half. CJ Ferrigno recovered his own kick forward and scored a try to the right of the goal post. A Michael Mukuru-Tumusiime conversion was good and the Keelhaulers had cut the deficit to 20-17.

Cal Maritime dominated the line outs on the day, and after another sideline win the Keelhaulers got out wide with Carroll on the left side to score a try, reclaiming the lead at 22-20 in the 51st minute.

A nice undercutting counter by the Keelhaulers -- that they ran more than once on the day -- led to John Bulaich punching it in for another try, and Maritime led 29-20. But Angelo St. answered at the 59-minute mark to make it 29-27 Rams. The Keelhaulers had a kick blockeded, and it set up a breakaway that put Angelo St. up 34-29 at the 62-minute mark.

Penalties on the Rams helped the Keelhaulers reclaim their lead, but much like the first half concluded, the Keelhaulers penalties would allow Angelo St. to go on a run. Ferrigno had a great kick downfield and tackle at the 72-minute mark, but a penalty would bit them then as well negating the gain.

The kicking game would help Martime tip the field again, but the Maritime defense trouble getting set late in the game. The Rams would get another run off the left side create some separation in the 76th minute, and set the final score at 39-29.
