Keelhaulers stay hot in friendly vs. St. Mary's
Cal Maritime won 20-15 over St. Mary's College's C-Side with strong second half.
Cal Maritime got on the board first with a penalty kick by Michael Mukuru-Tumusiime for an early 3-0 lead. The Gaels answered with a score right under the sticks on some ground and pound rugby with the forwards. The kick was unsuccessful making it a 5-3 lead for St. Mary's early on.
The Gaels stole a Cal Maritime line out and took it in for a try but again missed the conversion for a 10-3 St. Mary's lead. The Gaels scored again from a long run but missed the conversion, but Cal Maritime answered back with a huge run off the kickoff as senior Phoenix Benitez intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for the try. The Conversion was good by Mukuru-Tumusiime making it a 15-10 St. Mary's lead at half
The Keelhaulers tightened their defense and improved their execution in the second half to score 10 unanswered points. Freshman Jacob Jenkins converted a try in the corner and Mukuru-Tumusiime converted a try with 15 minutes left to seal the 20-15 victory for Cal Maritime.
The Keelhaulers were originally scheduled to play at home vs. the Sacramento U-23 Titans, but the Titans were not able to make the game. St. Mary's was ready to come to Cal Maritime to fill in, but the city was repairing water mains that led to water service being shut down on the Cal Maritime campus.
