VALLEJO, Calif. – A historic Saturday that starts at 9 a.m. inside the Compass Room, at the inaugural Cal Maritime Athletics Hall of Fame Brunch, will continue at Bodnar Field at 1 p.m. when rugby hosts Cal State Monterey Bay in its 2023 season opener.
Throughout the final weeks of September, the Keelhaulers participated in a pair of scrimmages to give newcomers a taste of competition at the collegiate level and help everyone prep for a challenging slate that includes three consecutive road games sandwiched between home events.
After hosting the Otters, the Keelhaulers will head to Pacific next Saturday before traveling to Southern California for games at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pepperdine on the 21st and 22nd, respectively.
A packed month of action throughout October will culminate at Bodnar Field on Nov. 4 when Cal Poly Humboldt visits Vallejo for this annual showdown between the Pacific Western Conference's top two teams.
Before the program shifts its focus to its upcoming opponents, rugby alums and friends of the program will celebrate the induction of former cadet-athlete Mike Schindler to Cal Maritime's Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class of honorees.
From 2003-07, no Keelhauler made his presence felt on the rugby field more than Schindler, a former MVP, all-conference selection and team captain.
"Mike was an influential captain for a young varsity program and was the most dominant player in any game he played," said head coach Steve Hiatt. "He destroyed opposing scrums, like someone who dismantles a defensive line in football."
