Keelhaulers Lose Tight Soccer Match to Menlo College

Keelhaulers Lose Soccer Home Opener to Menlo Oaks.

Playing its home opener in front of a large and raucous crowd, the Keelhaulers once again started the game brightly, which produced several really good scoring chances. A superb first half strike by Menlo Forward Alex Vatic , proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss to Menlo College.

Vatic's strike in the 28th minute of play, took the wind out of the Keelhaulers sails and the game lost much of its tempo for the remainder of the first half.

Cal Maritime started the second half pressing for an equalizing goal; a well executed strike from Forward, Marcel Amann, was denied by a superb save from Menlo Oaks Goalkeeper Daniel Schwartz midway through the second half.

Soon afterwards Keelhaulers Forward Colin McCarthy found the net but his volley from outside the six yard box was ruled offside.

Spurred on by the support of the home fans, Cal Maritime kept on attacking.

David Tucker narrowly missed a free kick from the 20 yards and Daniel Milward shot just over the bar in the final 10 minutes of play.

Credit is due to the Cal Maritime team for playing a solid 90 minutes of soccer, but in the end the Menlo Oaks were able to protect their lead in a very competitive match.

Cal Maritimes next game will be against Holy Names, this Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at Merritt College in Oakland.
