Holy Names Show Their Soccer Power
It did not take Holy Names long to show why they are the favorites to win the Cal Pac conference.
Just 63 seconds after the opening kickoff, midfielder Juan Martin, put the Hawks ahead with a cool finish after dribbling through the heart of the Maritime defense.
Two minutes later Ramus Larson netted another goal for the Hawks and the Keelhaulers were down two, just three minutes into the game.
Larson added his second goal, on a well taken header from a cross by Henry Goh at the eight minute mark, the Hawks making it look easy.
Showing why they are the defending conference champions, Holy Names, continued to keep possession passing the ball with ease for the remainder of the first half. The lone bright spot for Cal Maritime came from a 25 yard strike from Daniel Milward that hit the bar; Thomas Hernandez blasted the rebound over the net from six yards, in the 25th minute.
The second half, the Keelhaulers' defense was a lot more organized, and was able to prevent the Hawks from adding to their first half tally. An inspirational performance from goalie Kyle Carpenter, who made his first ever start in goal, kept the score respectable. Kyle had five saves in the second half and 13 in total, and was clearly the "man of the match" for Cal Maritime.
Cal Maritime are now 0-3, and face another tough opponent as they travel to Rocklin to face the Warriors of William Jessup, Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
