Wonder Strike Ends Streak!
Cal Maritime defeated Pacific Union 2-1 Sunday afternoon, the Keelhaulers first conference win of the season. It was the first win for Maritime since October 13, 2007, a span that lasted 33 consecutive games.
The game was played under wet and rainy conditions on BodnAr Field where both the host Keelhaulers and the Pioneers enjoyed some decent scoring opportunities in the first half though neither side could find the net. The half ended as it began 0 - 0.
As the second half got underway however, it did not take long for Pacific Union to score. Pioneer, Edrei Mauries, put the visitors ahead when a mix up in the Keelhaulers defense gifted a goal for the visitors with less than 2 minutes having expired.
Maritime answered back almost immediately, when a free kick taken by Dan Lowry hit the bar the rebound falling to an unmarked Daniel Milward who calmly headed the ball home for his first college goal. The quick strike back by the Keelhaulers clearly changed the momentum of the game in CMA's favor and set the tone for a strong, aggressive second half.
Again this week, Maritime enjoyed a loud crowd, the student section, who are fast becoming the 12th man of the soccer team, urged the Keelhaulers forward.
Few will forget the strike that won the game and ended the Keelhaulers' losing streak. A spectacular overhead bicycle kick by captain George Dick, put Cal Maritime ahead and sent the student section into a frenzy.
Of the goal, Coach Christodoulou commented "one of, if not the best goals I have ever seen".
There were a few tense moments toward the end of the game as the Pioneers pressed for an equalizer, but goalkeeper Will Akers produced two outstanding saves to keep the Cal Maritime lead a secure a much overdue win.
