Shorthanded Soccer Men Win Over Simpson University

Full Steam Ahead, as shorthanded Maritime wins Again.

The California Maritime Soccer team traveled to Redding on Saturday, to take on the Red Hawks of Simpson University.

Due to school commitments, Maritime would play the game without the services of three of their regular starting eleven. Kick off started promptly at 2:00 pm, and from the opening whistle both teams came out determined to impress.

The first half was a battle between two teams working really hard on both sides of the ball. Stand outs for the Red Hawks were Micahel Guzman and Luis Perez who always looked dangerous going forward.

The Keelhaulers again produced a workmanlike defensive performance highlighted by the outstanding play of senior midfielder David Tucker and freshman full back Brian Edmiston.

The first half was an evenly matched and hard fought contest. Maritime lost two players to injury just before the half. Starting central defender, Will Lindsey, suffered a calf injury and Vincent Parker left the field with a thigh injury as a result of a mistimed tackle from behind.

The second half was much the same as the first. Slowly the fresher Simpson squad began to press for a winner, the Keelhaulers, continued to work hard on the defensive side of the ball.

As the half progressed it appeared that the game was destined for overtime, until junior fullback Nic Anderson produced a moment of magic when he dribbled through four Red Hawk defenders and slotted the ball home into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead with 8 minutes left to go.

Simpson now pressed their attack and was almost caught again when Maritime's Ryan Jackson hit an uncontested strike from just outside the box only to see it turned away by a superb save by Simpson goalie Justin Webb.

In the end, Maritime prevailed 1-0. Goalkeepers Will Akers and Kyle Carpenter playing a half each preserved the shut out for the Keelhaulers.

Maritime has ahead potentially troubled waters, as their next three games are against stiff competition.

Monday, the Keelhaulers travel to San Rafael to take on Dominican University, kick off at 4:00pm.
