Oaks Sink Maritime Men
Oaks Sink Maritime
Cal Maritime traveled to Atherton to take on the Oaks of Menlo College, Tuesday afternoon.
For the first time all season, Maritime came out determined to establish a passing attack. Although they enjoyed some early possession, the Keelhaulers could not muster an attack serious enough to worry the Menlo keeper.
The game turned quickly when at nine minutes the Oak's Ricardo Urruela unleashed a spectacular strike from 20 yards that beat the unsighted Maritime keeper Kyle Carpenter.
The hosts would score again, although contested at the 22 minute mark, when forward Alex Vukic, found himself in acres of space, and headed home a cross. The score remained 2-0 into the break.
The Keelhaulers again would prove resilient opposition, refusing to give up. Maritime tried to take the game to Menlo. The second half saw the visitors create more chances, as Marshall Fice and Jeff Squire worked tirelessly the entire game. Maritime goalie Kyle Carpenter, making his first start of the season, was the busier keeper, but the visitors defense led by Colin McCarthy and Alex Martinez, worked hard the entire second half to keep the Oaks at bay.
Coach Christodoulou said, "Menlo is a good team, well coached, with more than a few really quality players. At the end of the day they deserved the win, but I am again really proud of our team. They just refuse to give in no matter what the score, they are never intimidated. They give me 100%, what more could any coach ask from a team"
Cal Maritime will play this Saturday, when they host Arizona Christian University. Thiswill be the last non-conference match of the 2011 season.
