Maritime Soccer Wins Again
The Cal Maritime Men's soccer team defeated Pacific Union for a second time this season by a score of 3-1 Tuesday night.
The host Keelhaulers started the game as if they were tied to a pier while the visiting Pioneers wasted no time. Punishment for the CMA sluggish start: after only two minutes Matthew Kimble, put the visitors ahead via an uncontested shot from just inside 6 yard box.
The quick opening goal by Pacific Union seemed to awaken the Maritime team and from that point on they produced their best performance of the season. The Keelhaulers took control of the game by maintaining possession, passing the ball with ease around the park. The Keelhauler's control of the game was demonstrated on the host's first goal produced by Jeff Squire who slotted home a pass from Marshall Fice for his first collegiate goal. The strike came, after Maritime had strung together a series of 15 passes or more. It was easily the best team goal of the year!
The Pioneers, however, would not be easily broken, soaking up wave after wave of attack. They kept the hosts at bay for the rest of the half and the score was tied at one apiece going into the break.
The second half started the way the first ended, Maritime looking the better team, controlling the game and appearing very dangerous going forward. Full back Ahron Huff almost put the hosts ahead when a shot from point blank range was brilliantly saved by Pacific Union keeper Josh Koot. Still Maritime attacked and at the 72nd minute, Captain George Dick smashed home a deflected shot from Marshall Fice for the lead.
Maritime would add another goal only 2 minutes later when junior full back Nic Anderson's shot found the net putting the host ahead by 2 with only 10 minutes left to play.
Maritime would see out the game which was certainly the best performance of the year for the Keelhaulers who next play host to Simpson University next Tuesday night, game time is 6:00 at Dan Foley Park in Vallejo.
