Maritime loose heartbreaker in Overtime
The Red Hawks of Simpson University edged Cal Maritime 2-1 In overtime Tuesday Night
This was a contest between two teams who were determined to outwork each other, it was a battle from beginning to end and in the end Simpson would prevail when a deflected shot from Jon Dinius, would beat Maritime Keeper Will Akers for the win.
I am sure both coaches would be extremely proud of their teams performance, this was a game that was played the right way, a hard fought but fair contest. It was a game that did not deserve to have a team lose, and even though Maritime suffered a painful loss there were two winners who left the field Tuesday night.
The game was an entertaining one to watch and at times the action was end to end, both team working their socks off.
Simpson would find a breakthrough on 33 minutes when a foul just outside the box set up a free kick for Simpson. The resulting kick was saved but the rebound fell kindly to Jon Dinius who smashed home the opener.
Maritime would continue the hard work and see out the half trailing 1-0.
The second half was just like the first, both teams determined to get the win, both getting chances, Vincent Parker hitting the posts for the hosts as numerous chances went without scoring for both sides as the half worn on. The Keelhaulers would even the score on 66 minutes when Jeff Squire would slot a through ball to Marshall Fice who fired home the equalizer from 12 yards.
Now the game really heated up, as both squads sensed an opportunity to win the game, neither side however could break the deadlock and the score was tied after the full 90 minutes.
The game ended 6 minutes into the overtime period when Jon Dinius scored the winner off an unplanned deflection by Thomas Hernandez.
Great game by both teams, next up Maritime takes it on the road against the Warriors of William Jessup.
