Maritime Enjoy Another Home Win
The Cal Maritime soccer team hosted the Pioneers of Pacific Union University on Tuesday night.
From the opening whistle, the Keelhaulers looked the livelier of the two sides, and attacked the visitors with vigor. Many good chances went begging as Patrick Wehan, Dan Milward and Jeff Squier all had scoring opportunities, but none could be converted to a goal.
The Pioneers held CMA at bay for much of the first half, when finally forward Marshall Fice put CMA in front when he coolly converted a nice through ball from Ryan Jackson.
The Pioneers went into the break fortunate to be down by only one goal.
The second half was much like the first with the Keelhaulers controlling the game, creating many scoring chances, but CMA was unable to find the net. Silas Collentine, playing alongside Hilberth Ibarro, controlled the midfield, which cut out any chance of a counter attack from Pacific Union.
With the score remaining in CMA's favor at 1-0, frustration began to rise as the Pioneers attempted to gain possession of the ball in the midfield and the Keelhaulers continued to see their numerous attempts miss the net. As the game progressed it started to get a little chippy, as both teams realized the outcome was far from over. Then with 10 minutes to go, Zach Hayes was able to head the ball in for a second goal which put the game out of reach for the visitors.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edmiston was given his first ever start in goal and had four saves on the night to record his first shutout.
The team will next play away at Menlo on the Saturday October 27th.
