Penguins Defeat Maritime

The California Maritime Academy men's soccer team played host to the Penguins of Dominican University on Tuesday September 24th, 2013

The visitors started the game the livelier of the two squads and looked in control for the opening 10 minutes of the match. Dominican's Kolby Mitnick scored at the 11.40 mark to give the Penguins a much deserved lead.

The opening goal seemed to settle the Keelhaulers and for the remainder of the half, Maritime started to take control of the midfield and created some good scoring opportunities. The first half had scoring opportunities at both ends, however neither side could convert their chances and the Penguins went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Maritime would start the second half well. Zach Hayes and Will Lindsey controlled the center of the pitch and frustrated the Penguins with their defensive commitment. Patrick Wehan missed tying the score when his uncontested shot from 10 yards was neatly turned away by Patrick Rabbitt

Dominican still enjoyed the better of the offensive opportunities and 18 minutes after the restart mark, Mark Caliguire's header off a corner kick found the goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Maritime would continue to press; forward Marshall Fice continued to be influential in attack and had a couple of good looks on goal only to have then denied by the visiting keeper.

Juan Melendez, putting in perhaps his best performance in a Keelhauler shirt worked tirelessly behind the ball to contain the visitor's chances.

Dominican would add number three with 10 minutes remaining when Maritime goalie Kyle Carpenter mistimed a tackle inside the box. The resulting spot kick was converted by Swap Mushiana, to close out the scoring.

The next home game is on Friday October 27th against the defending Cal Pac Champions Embry Riddle
