Keelhaulers Earn first Win of the Season
On Tuesday October 22nd, 2013 the California Maritime Academy traveled to Angwin, CA to take on the Pioneers of Pacific Union College.
It was the host Pioneers who would start the game on the front foot with CMA clearly struggling on the choppy field conditions.
Pacific Union would create a few chances during the opening 10 minutes of action, forcing CMA keeper Kyle Carpenter to make a couple of saves, but he was never really troubled during the opening stanza.
Once accustomed to the Pioneer field the Keelhaulers started to apply more and more pressure and it looked like a first-half goal was in the cards.
The best opportunity fell to Zach Hayes, when his uncontested header from 10 yards hit the underside of the bar, the host was able to clear the ball off the line and away from danger.
The first-half ended with a tied score line, but the visitors clearly the side that looked the most likely to score.
The second half began with Maritime playing more direct and with the change came a flurry of scoring chances.
Patrick Wehan, Jeff Squier and Marshall Fice all had good looks at goal only to be denied by the wood work or the Pioneer keeper. For the second straight game Maritime enjoyed more shots than their opponents yet could not convert those chances into goals, and after full time, both sides remained tied at zero.
Freshman Joe Mancuso almost ended the game at the beginning of the first overtime period but his miss from inside of six yards summed up the game. The Pioneers had a couple of opportunities of their own, but Will Lindsey and Ben Tamone marshaled the back line well and were both alert to any danger.
The second overtime period began and it looked as though the game was going to end deadlocked. With less than 5 minutes remaining, Juan Melandez recovered the ball in the Pioneer half then drove to the box and played a perfect through ball to Zach Hayes, who dispatched the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Keelhaulers their first, much deserved win, of the season.
The next game is away on Wednesday October 30th against the Warriors of William Jessup.
