REDDING, Calif. - Midway through a busy week of soccer, which includes four games in seven days, Cal Maritime showed firsthand why it is one of the Cal Pac Conference's young and rising teams, thanks to a second-half performance at Simpson Soccer Field that tested the host Red Hawks.
Throughout the final 45 minutes of action, an evenly-played half saw Simpson out-shoot the Keelhaulers by one attempt (5-4), Fabian Garcia collect one more save compared to his counterpart, and neither team found the back of the net from halftime until the final horn sounded.
It was SU's early offence that became the difference in CSUM"s inaugural Cal Pac game of the season since the Red Hawks scored in the fifth minute, then tacked on another two within a 17-minute timespan before the break to hand Cal Maritime a 3-0 loss in Redding.
Off on Saturday, men's soccer will return to Bodnar Field for its next pair of games, starting with Sunday's 11 a.m. Cal Pac home opener vs. Soka. Two days later, Menlo will visit campus for a 5:30 p.m. clash. The Keelhaulers will enter this weekend's conference home opener versus the Lions with a 0-3 overall and 0-1 Cal Pac record. Simpson will continue its season at 3-3-2 and 2-0-1, respectively.
