José Diaz named Cal Pac Offensive Player of the Week

VALLEJO, Calif. – Senior defender/midfielder José Diaz' weekend was a memorable one because he scored his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute of Saturday's Cal Pac Conference opener versus Simpson to tie the game at one apiece. Fifteen minutes later, he earned the game-winning assist by setting up Mateo Sanchez' goal — one that lifted Cal Maritime to a 2-1 win in front of its home fans at Bodnar Field.

By finishing the afternoon with three points and helping the Keelhaulers snap a couple of streaks in the process, conference officials selected Diaz as its Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

This is the first time the league bestowed weekly honors to the two-time All-Cal Pac selection who hails from Cornelius, Oregon.

Diaz' goal was the first scored by a Keelhauler against Simpson since 2017; his effort helped the team defeat the Red Hawks for the first time in the program's recorded history since SU won all 11 head-to-head games played since 2015.

Cal Maritime will continue its season-opening homestand by welcoming Westcliff and Stanton to Bodnar Field on Friday and Sunday, respective kickoffs are set for 7 and 1:30 p.m.
