VALLEJO, Calif. – Following a season canceled due to COVID-19, Cal Maritime men's water polo will return to action this weekend and face UC Davis, UC Merced, Cal and Chico State throughout the Keelhauler Classic — a two-day club water polo tournament that will take place at PEAC Pool.
"It feels great to play water polo games again," said head coach Steve Doten. "The guys are excited to return to the pool, I am looking forward to returning to the deck and providing an opportunity to cadets that will allow them to play the game they love.
"Teams, cadets and students are excited to get out there and play games throughout the weekend."
The Keelhaulers will open tournament action Saturday morning when they face UC Davis at 9 a.m. before wrapping-up Saturday's schedule with a 2:30 p.m. match against UC Merced. On Sunday, men's water polo will compete in two of the event's final four matchups when it squares-off against Cal at 12:15 p.m. and Chico State at 3:40 p.m. in the Classic's final game.
With 30 cadet-athletes on roster, and a limited number of practices that took place since everyone reported back to campus, this weekend's tournament will provide an excellent opportunity for Cal Maritime to strengthen team chemistry, become more comfortable competing alongside one another and highlight areas to focus in subsequent weeks.
"This weekend is a great opportunity for me to evaluate the team, for everyone to understand our potential, see our team and individual strengths firsthand through competition. Once this weekend is over, I can look at those evaluations and help everyone prepare for the next phase of our season," said Doten.
Following the Keelhauler Classic, men's water polo will have three weeks to prepare for its next tournament, which opens on October 23 at UC Merced. Also taking place later this season is the Sierra Pacific Championship Tournament, a two-day postseason event slated to take place on campus.
Added Doten, "winning games is one of our goals for the weekend, but we are going to gain a lot of experience that will help us learn about who we are and how to handle various game situations."
