VALLEJO, Calif. – Six teams will head to PEAC Pool this weekend to join tournament host Cal Maritime for this weekend's Sierra Pacific Championship. Action in Vallejo will begin on Saturday, Oct. 30 with group matchups and continue on Sunday with the final round of games.
Sunday's championship match is slated for 12:30 p.m. with the winner earning a coveted spot at the Men's National Club Championship. This battle for a national title will take place in Huntsville, Alabama, from Nov. 12-14.
Cal Maritime won three of four games played for the second time in a row when it defeated UC Davis, Stanford and San José State in last weekend's UC Merced Tournament.
The Keelhaulers' Sierra Pacific Championship slate begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday when it squares off against UC Merced. The winner of this matchup will face the winner of Game 3, which features San José State and UC Davis at 12:10 p.m.
If Cal Maritime collects a pair of wins, it will advance to Sunday's 12:30 p.m. championship game and battle whichever Group A team — Cal, Chico State or Stanford — finishes in 1st place once Saturday's round robin play concludes.
"It's been a while since the guys competed in a conference championship, everyone is excited about this opportunity," said head coach Steve Doten. "As am I.
"The path is difficult because we will face good teams. It is up to us to play well; I like our chances because the team experienced a lot of progress and improvement this season. We need to execute the little things, whether it is a regular season game or conference championship, because that is how we enjoyed success this year."
