VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime will open the 2022 season in a familiar location when local schools travel to Vallejo to participate in the second-annual Keelhauler Classic men's water polo tournament.

Including the Keelhaulers, Cal, San José State, UC Davis and UC Merced will compete in four matches throughout the weekend by playing a pair each day.

These schools will return to campus in late October to compete for the Sierra Pacific Conference title, and an automatic berth to the national championships since Cal Maritime is hosting the league's year-end playoffs for the second year in a row.

Returning for second-year head coach Steve Doten are 10 players — a group that includes five seniors — from last year's squad, one that advanced to the championship game of the league's postseason event before falling to Cal.

The Keelhauler Classic will provide another nine cadet-athletes with their first taste of college action since they enter the 2022 campaign as true freshmen.

Taking place between this pair of home tournaments is Cal Maritime's third event of the season, the UC Santa Cruz Tournament, slated for the weekend of October 15-16. Opponents for that event include Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, UC Santa Cruz and Pacific.
