Men’s water polo secures second place in Sierra Pacific’s postseason tournament
VALLEJO, Calif. – Following a pair of wins on Saturday over San José State and top-ranked Chico State, Cal Maritime earned the right to battle for a league title, and an automatic berth at the College Water Polo Association's national postseason tournament, when it squared off against Cal in Sunday's championship match at PEAC Pool.
Even though Cal scored the first four goals of the game, all taking place throughout the first period, Cal Maritime responded in the following period by scoring back-to-back goals of its own, thanks to Jake Douglas and Ian Healy, to chop that deficit in half with 4:10 left until halftime.
However, the Golden Bears regained their initial advantage by scoring twice to lead 6-2 at the break.
By scoring the only two goals recorded in the third and the first of the fourth period, Cal's lead grew to seven before Charles Jolly and Kevin Kraatz found the back of the cage with 2:15 and 1:40 left to play.
By winning Sunday's showdown, 9-4, Cal captured the Sierra Pacific's title against the Keelhaulers for the second year in a row.
Cal Maritime ends the 2022 season with a 7-4 overall record and wins in seven of its last nine matches, losing only to Cal within that timespan.
