CSUM sweeps Saturday’s slate at CWPA Tournament
VALLEJO, Calif. – Cal Maritime's weekend at PEAC Pool started on a positive note Saturday morning when men's water polo doubled-up on Cal State Monterey Bay and defeated the Otters, 16-8.
Tied at four midway through the second period, the Keelhaulers scored the next three goals to create a comfortable cushion entering the midpoint of the third quarter.
Goals from Kevin Kraatz, Austin Hochadel and a pair from Ian Healy helped the Keelhaulers enter the final quarter with momentum as that scoring surge extended their team's lead to seven.
Even though the Otters scored late, all that did was turn a game-high 10-goal lead into the game's final margin.
Momentum from that morning's victory carried over to men's water polo's final match of the day as its defense prevented UC Santa Cruz from scoring in the entire second half.
Responsible for the game's entire offense throughout the last two quarters, scoring six unanswered helped the Keelhaulers turn a 7-7 tie at halftime into an impressive 13-7 result.
After sweeping both games played on Saturday, Cal Maritime will look to continue its winning ways throughout Sunday's action, starting with the CWPA's marquee showdown between Cal and Cal Maritime — the same matchup that took place in the championship game of the league's postseason tournament the last two seasons.
Following that 1:40 p.m. game versus the Golden Bears, the Keelhaulers will wrap-up this weekend's tournament at 3:55 p.m. against San José State.
