Men’s water polo finishes CWPA Tournament with a 3-1 record
VALLEJO, Calif. – Matthew Turecek's goal in the opening period of Sunday's tournament finale broke a 3-3 tie against San José State and gave Cal Maritime the lead for good in a CWPA Tournament matchup won by the Keelhaulers, 15-10.
By outscoring the visiting Spartans, 4-2, in each of the following two periods, CSUM built a sizable lead that was never threatened for the rest of the afternoon and capped a successful weekend that included wins in three of four games played.
That result also provided the perfect ending to a day that started on a tough note since Cal recorded a 13-5 win over men's water polo, the lone blemish suffered by Cal Maritime throughout an outstanding weekend of action at PEAC Pool.
In that game against the Golden Bears, Carlo Ferreira and Marcos Ortega led the Keelhaulers with two goals; Chris Frazier was responsible for his team's other tally.
Other than the first period, which saw Cal quickly build a 5-0 lead, the Keelhaulers provided a competitive test to the two-time Sierra Pacific Division champions. That slow start created a deficit that CSUM could not erase since the Golden Bears increased that cushion by outscoring their hosts, 4-1 in the second quarter.
Each team scored three times throughout the second half.
Cal Maritime will remain local for its next tournament, the Sierra Pacific Division Championship since this battle for the league's automatic berth at the national tournament will take place at PEAC Pool on October 14-15.
Once set by CWPA officials, GoKeelhaulers.com will announce the official schedule of matches for this two-day postseason tournament since the opening set of games are determined by conference placing.
Saturday's first game will start at 10 a.m. and feature the league's first- and eighth-place teams. Winners of their first Sierra Pacific Division match will advance to the winner's bracket; Sunday's first match is scheduled for 9 a.m.
