VALLEJO, Calif. –
Eight teams will visit PEAC Pool this weekend with the same mission as Cal Maritime: Win the Sierra Pacific Division Championship and punch a ticket to the national postseason tournament. For the Keelhaulers, their playoff run will begin at 9:40 a.m. Saturday against UC Santa Cruz.

Since only the initial game for participating teams is set, and matchups taking place the back-half of Saturday and all day Sunday will depend of the first set of games taking place this weekend, visit Cal Maritime Men's Water polo's online schedule, @GoKeelhaulers on Instagram or Facebook to view an updated schedule of games as the tournament progresses.

Timing is everything for coaches, their goal is to help their team improve as the season takes place and peak at the right time of the season, the playoffs. For CSUM head coach Matt De Trane, his squad is playing their best water polo when it really matters and will fight for the league's automatic postseason berth in front of a home crowd.

What started with a split of their inaugural water polo matched of the year during a season-opening weekend trip to Merced culminated with an undefeated record at last weekend's CWPA Tournament.

By virtue of its better record by playing more games than Cal Maritime, San Francisco will enter the weekend as the Championship's top seed. Right behind them as the second seed is Cal Maritime.

Saturday's scenario is simple for the Keelhaulers: Defeat the Banana Slugs and enjoy a strategic respite because you will not return to the pool until 8:30 a.m. Sunday to play the winner of Saturday's Chico State-Stanford match that begins immediately following CSUM's tournament opener vs. UCSC.

The Sierra Pacific Division Championship provided the stage for two outstanding playoff performances by Cal Maritime in recent years when it advanced to the championship match in 2021 and 2022, finishing second to Cal each season.

Last year, the Keelhaulers fell to Stanford in the Third Place Match — adding extra incentive to avenge last year's result should CSUM and the Cardinal face one another this weekend.
