Men's Cross Country Hits the Ground Running

Cal Maritime opened their inaugural season in Merced, California at the UC Merced Invitational on Saturday, September 29th. In hot, dry conditions the team competed on a challenging course filled with turns, loops and different running surfaces. The women ran 3 miles and the men ran 5 miles. "It was a great experience for us to get this first race in. " Exciting" was the word used by first year coach Jeff Ward to describe the future of the program.

The men were led by a trio of Keelhaulers who finished within 30 seconds of each other. Sophomore Scott Zane crossed first, followed closely by freshmen Alex Maldonado and sophomore Brent Moore. Paul Beck and Cody Del Rosario finished out the Keelhaulers top 5. The men's team had 11 members run in the race.

UC Merced led all runners in both the men's and women's races. "They are a very talented team, and UC Merced put on a well organized race. We look forward to coming back and improving on our performance here", said sophomore Paul Beck.

The Keelhaulers will travel to Pacific Union College to run in the PUC Invitational Friday Oct 5th.
