Women finish 5th, men capture 9th place in season-opening meet
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Senior Nora Anastasi led Cal Maritime with her time of 22:49.8, on the 5k course in Saturday's 10th-annual Master's University XC Invitational, to help the women's team capture fifth place in its inaugural meet of the 2021 season. Senior Isaiah Sulivan led a contingent of eight Keelhauler runners on the men's side by posting a 28:49.8 on the 8K circuit at Central Park, which led to a 9th place finish.
Following Anastasi, the 39th overall individual from her division to cross the finish line, were junior Julia Mast and senior Alex Corral to record a 54th- and 64th-place result. Completing Cal Maritime's list of participants were sophomore Katherine Nguyen and junior Sarai Alonso, at No. 69 and 70.
Senior Nick Yarusso, sophomore Trevor Hodges and junior Stefan Schwiesow scored for their team by finishing No. 47, 56 and 82, respectively, to record the next three fastest men's times for the Keelhaulers following Sulivan.
Ben Handy, the only freshman harrier from either team to make his collegiate debut in Santa Clarita, was the 95th competitor to finish; he led the Keelhaulers' second block of times since he was responsible for the team's fifth-fastest run.
Sandwiched between a pair teammates in sophomore Cian Cunningham and senior Justin Storrs was sophomore Ried Zieber who finished 103rd — two spots behind the former and five ahead of the latter.
Cal Poly will return home with women's and men's team titles since they were responsible for the lowest overall score in each Open Division. Hope International's Emma Timmerman and Whittier College's Benjamin White posted the fastest individual times.
Cal Maritime will have a few weeks to prepare for its next meet, which will take place on Saturday, October 16, when it heads to UC Merced to compete in the Ryan Munez Bobcat Invitational.
