VALLEJO, Calif. – For the second time in as many weeks, both Cal Maritime cross country teams are in action when the Keelhaulers head to Rocklin, California, to participate in the William Jessup Warrior Invitational.
In the six-year history of this race, Cal Maritime will make its fourth appearance at the Warrior Invite this Saturday. The women will tackle the 5k loop course at 8:45 a.m. followed by the men's 8k competition at 9:45 a.m. Each loop is 1.66 miles with 93 feet of elevation gain. The highest, to lowest point difference is 60 feet.
"Since Cal Maritime started two weeks later than usual, it was difficult to get our conditioning where it needs to be right away. I am really happy with everyone's progress and effort since the start of the season," said junior Julia Mast.
"For this weekend's meet, I just want everyone to do their best and run a smart race."
Said junior Trevor Hodges, I want to see if we can hold the first mile at 5:45, hold the next two, then start to negative split. This is going to be one of our faster meets of the season."
In last week's Ryan Munoz Bobcat Invitational, hosted by UC Merced, both Keelhauler teams recorded individual times as the men's competition took place on a 4-mile course with the women running a traditional distance of 5k.
Not only will Cal Maritime look to post the best individual results possible, the men's and women's team will also use the on-campus course as its final tune-up for the league's year-end championship meet, which is slated to take place in Fresno on Monday, November 1.
Added Mast, "since this is our final race before the Cal Pac Championship, everyone should treat this race as a practice competition, find their pace and support one another throughout the meet."
"I was a little nervous at the start of the year because we lost a few runners. For numerous individuals, this is their first session. But this year exceeded my expecations because I feel the team is both closer and faster than last year," said Hodges.
