Sailing Team Races to a Successful Weekend
PCCSC Match Race Championship
St. Francis Yacht Club & California Maritime Academy
San Francisco, CA
October 29-30, 2011
Saturday, October 29: Saturday morning of the PCCSC Match Race Championship saw little to no breeze on the City Front. However by 2pm the westerly filled beautifully and built to a steady 10-15 knots. Racing ran until dark, allowing for six flights and 24 matches to be completed. The current was ebbing all day and strongest in the late afternoon (3.5-4 knots), making for quick beats and long downwind runs. The matches were close with many penalties. Several races came down to the wire. UC Irvine, Stanford, and Cal Maritime ended the day with five points each. Dillon Lancaster '14, Scott Doyle, '14 and CC Childers '15 represented CMA. Lancaster and Doyle were on the winning team in 2010.
Sunday, October 30: the westerly breeze filled earlier today, topping off at 11 knots. Racing started at 1230h and a flood tide held for most of the afternoon. Cal Maritime faced Stanford in the last race of the round robin. Their timing was a little off and they had their first loss.
Finishing in the 1-2 spot, Stanford and Cal Maritime competed in a knock out series, first to win two races. The racing was the most aggressive of the regatta and Stanford fought hard to win. The Stanford win qualifies them for the ICSA Match Race Championship which will be hosted by Cal Maritime at the St. Francis Yacht Club on November 18-20 in the same fleet of J22s.
