Sailing wins in Charleston
Cal maritime offshore sailing team headed out to Charleston for the inaugural Charleston College Offshore Regatta. Unfortunately, due to the severe weather in the north east a handful of teams had to withdraw from attending. The teams that were able to make it were very strong including the team from the United States Naval Academy ( USNA) that has won the College Offshore Championship to sail in the Student Yachting World Cup in 2012 and 2013.
Saturday was raining very hard in the morning but the rain lifted and we had cold clear sky's and about 12knots of breeze. Cma was 2nd in the first race but got there act together after a slightly chaotic first race and finished the day with 3 bullets (1st place).
On Sunday our boat did not seem as fast as the one we had on Saturday. USNA took a penalty after the start of Race 1. Cal Maritime needed a 3rd place or better or to have host College of Charleston beat USNA. In Race 2, Cal Maritime had a fantastic start but rounded the top mark in 3rd just behind USNA. Charleston was out in front. After good downwind sailing to fight of the United States Coast Guard Academy, Cal Maritime was able to win the regatta.
Final Results:
California Maritime Academy 1st
College of Charleston 2nd
United States Naval Academy 3rd
