Rose Bowl Recap-Sailing
At Rose Bowl this weekend, the Cal Maritime Sailing Team competed against the top teams in the country. After 2 days of zero to less than zero wind, our keelhaulers ended up in 20th place. Due to the lack of wind, only 1 race was counted on Day 1 in Long Beach. On day 2, after waiting around all day for any sight of wind, we finally saw some dustings of breeze beginning around 2:00. According to ICSA rules, each division must hold 3 races to constitute a regatta and with a no-start-after time of 1500, most participants began de-rigging their boats to head in to get on the road home realizing that we would not be able to get 5 races underway in less than an hour.
However, the race committee persevered, deciding to throw out the no-start-after time and ran short, fast races. After the A fleets sat drifting on a boat in the hot sun for 2 days, and the B fleets hadn't even seen any water time in 2 days, many of the teams had a rough regatta and whispers of protesting the race committee were around at the end of the day. Not having the ability to stay any longer before hitting the road, we decided not to protest and packed it in.
It was a long windless weekend on the water but a bad day on the water is better than a good day anywhere else.
